Traditional Thanjavur Style Bharata Natyam Instruction and Performance
in the Greater Boston Area
Vidyanjali is under the umbrella of Hindu Temple Rhythms established in 1958 to preserve and promote Classical Indian Arts in North America. Based in the Greater Boston Area, Vidyanjali aims to educate young artists in the traditional Thanjavur style of Bharatanatyam as taught by Guru Sudha Chandra Sekhar of Hindu Temple Rhythms and the Gurus of Sri Rajarajeshwari Bharata Natya Kalamandir in Mumbai, India.
Bharatanatyam Training for Children and Adults
Classes are currently held in Newton, Massachusetts at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Master Classes with Guru Sudha Chandra Sekhar.
Beginner Bharatanatyam Classes
This introduction class to the basics of Bharata Natyam, including foot positions (padabhedas), hand gestues (asamyutahastas) and the first few Adavu groups gives students a solid understanding of the foundations of the dance style. Recommended age: 5+
Intermediate Bharatanatyam Classes
As the students progress, they will begin to learn more advanced adavus and combinations, be introduced to abhinaya and theory, and begin learning the repertoire items of a Bharatanatyam margam. Prerequisite training in Bharatanatyam required.
Advanced Bharatanatyam Training
In this course senior-level students including Arangetram prep and post-graduate/adult students will explore the nuances of Bharatanatyam items such as Varnams, Thillanas and Padams. Extensive study of abhinaya and refinement of body positioning and architecture are a focus. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation.
